Sharing my computer with the people in the house

Computers
We only have one computer in the house. I don't mind sharing it at all. I just want to be able to work on it when I need to. So, I was thinking of getting another monitor. This is so while I'm working, another person could watch a movie on the other screen. I'm just wondering, do i need dual video cards? I'm not so sure if my computer would be capable of using two screens. I haven't tried it yet. Maybe I just need a cable that splits the video port on my machine. I don't know. I tried to go through the manual but it wasn't any help. It only talked about the standard setup with one monitor. It did show some cables that can be used for connections to it. I saw a picture if what seemed like a video cable with two heads. I may try that one of these days. First though I have to get me one of those split cables and also find a compatible monitor I can test it with.
